Opera Australia's acclaimed production of Salome was the big winner at the Green Room Awards last night, sweeping the Opera category with five awards.
The gory production directed by Gale Edwards won the coveted Best Production award, while Cheryl Barker was lauded for her gripping performance in the title role, winning Best Principal Female Artist (Opera).
The creative team of Julie Lynch, Brian Thompson and John Rayment won the Best Design award for their chilling design efforts. Simon Hewitt won Best Conductor (Opera) for his leadership of the orchestra and cast. Thomas Hall won Best Male Cover (Opera).
The production attracted rave reviews during the Melbourne Spring season last year.
Opera Australia's popular production of South Pacific was nominated in the Music Theatre category, with Andrew Greene collecting the best Musical Direction award.
Giorgio Caoduro won the Best Principal Male Artist (Opera) award for his performance in Lucia di Lammermoor.
